Gutters are the least glamorous part of an exterior and the part most likely to cause an expensive problem. A roof keeps water out of your house; gutters decide where that water goes once it's off the roof. Get that wrong and it ends up against your foundation.
Consider the volume involved. An inch of rain on a 1,500 square foot roof is roughly 900 gallons of water. If that lands in a ring around your foundation instead of being carried away, you eventually get hydrostatic pressure against the basement wall — which shows up as seepage, efflorescence, and cracking.
Sizing matters. A lot of Dayton-area homes have 5-inch K-style gutters with too few downspouts for their roof area. During heavy summer downpours the system simply can't carry the flow, so water sheets over the front edge — which looks like a clog but is actually a capacity problem. Stepping up to 6-inch gutters or adding downspouts fixes it.
Pitch matters just as much. Gutters need a slight, consistent fall toward each downspout. Too little and water stands in the run, breeding mosquitoes and adding weight until the hangers pull loose. Too much and it looks crooked from the street. Re-pitching an existing run is often all a sagging system needs.
Seamless is worth it. Sectional gutters from a big-box store have a joint every ten feet, and every joint is a future leak as the aluminum expands and contracts through Ohio's temperature swings. We form seamless gutters on-site to the exact length of each run, so the only seams are at corners and outlets.
Check the wood first. Hanging new gutters on rotted fascia is a waste of money — the hangers won't hold. If the fascia behind your current gutters is soft, that gets replaced before anything new goes up. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have the system sag in two years.
Finally, guards. Leaf guards won't make a system maintenance-free, but on a lot with mature trees they turn a twice-a-year cleaning into an occasional rinse, and they keep the downspouts clear when you need them most.
